Which Sunscreen Is Best for Your Face?

When choosing a sunscreen, there are two basic options: chemical sunscreen and physical sunscreen. Which one is best for you depends on your skin type, skin care treatments, and texture preference. Here are the differences between the two and when each might be recommended:

  • Chemical Sunscreen takes in the sun's radiation, changes it to heat, and releases it before it can harm your skin. Chemical sunscreens often have a more pleasing texture when compared to physical sunscreens, but are not the best choice for people who are sensitive to heat or have just had advanced work done, like laser or chemical peels. Examples of chemical sunscreen include popular skincare brands like Beauty of Joseon and Bask.
  • Physical Sunscreen uses minerals, like zinc oxide, to literally block and reflect the radiation away from your skin. They can be thicker and heavier and don't always blend into deeper skin tones invisibly, but they are the better choice for people with sensitive or sensitized skin. They tend to be less irritating and sit on top of the skin to block rays rather than being absorbed in for effectiveness. An example of physical sunscreen is given below from the skincare product line we love at IWC.

We use and recommend Dermalogica’s skincare products, many of which are available for purchase on site. We carry three different Dermalogica sunscreens, so there is something to suit everyone’s skin type and needs! Here are the sunscreens we carry, along with descriptions about what makes each one fabulous:
